Introducing the abode Gen 2 Gateway

Hello abode family!

Today we’re pleased to announce the introduction of the abode Gen 2 gateway, our updated gateway that will begin shipping in February 2019 as the hub powering our abode Essentials Starter Kits.

The abode Gen 2 gateway features 4G cellular backup capabilities and is Z-Wave Plus Certified thanks to the on-board Z-Wave 500 Series chip. Aesthetically, the Gen 2 gateway is identical to our legacy gateway. Same form factor, same robust smart home and security capabilities except with 4G cellular backup and Z-Wave 500 Series on-board.

Starting today, the Gen 2 gateway will ship as the hub within all abode Essentials Starter Kits. Kit pricing will be:

• $279 for the basic bundle with the Gen 2 gateway
• $299 for the CONNECT bundle with the Gen 2 gateway
• $359 for the SECURE bundle with the Gen 2 gateway

If you already have an abode system and are interested in purchasing the Gen 2 gateway to replace your legacy gateway, existing customers have the option to purchase just the gateway for $199.00 starting today. Please note, any customers that wish to replace their current gateway with the Gen 2 version will need to manually re-enroll all connected devices. Instructions for replacing your existing gateway and re-enrolling your devices will be sent via email and made available on our support site.

Support for all abode systems

We will continue to support all abode systems running on the Gen 1 gateway. Additionally, we will continue to develop for all abode solutions including the Gen 1 gateway, Gen 2 gateway, and iota. If you’re pleased with the performance of your existing gateway, there is no requirement to update to the Gen 2 gateway. Here at abode, we wanted to offer the same level of cellular backup capability and Z-Wave connectivity featured in iota to our original gateway form factor.

Apple HomeKit

On the HomeKit front, abode is 100% committed to bringing that functionality to users across our entire ecosystem of products and plan to have additional news to announce soon as we continue to work with the Apple HomeKit team.

We’re very excited to make the Gen 2 gateway available and bring enhanced Z-Wave connectivity and 4G cellular backup capabilities to our legacy hub form factor.
